Her dissertation, titled “Everyday Economies: Narratives and Negotiations of Cultural Economic Practices in Langley Park, Maryland,” focused on how Langley Park epitomizes everyday economies.

Leslie is a PhD candidate in Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington, where she designs community-engaged, culturally relevant interventions to support Black birthing people. Her research bridges Black feminist thought, service design, and health justice, centering community knowledge as both method and outcome. She is the creator of Cradles & Culture™, a community baby shower initiative that affirms Black motherhood through care, culture, and connection.

She edits breaking news, features, and accountability journalism and her reporting includes contributing to a Pulitzer-Prize-winning series on the opioid epidemic’s dramatically disproportionate impact on older Black men in partnership with The Baltimore Banner and The New York Times. Monique A. Major, Ph.D. is a Master Instructor in the Department of Psychology at Howard University. She is an alumna of Howard University where she earned her B.S. in Psychology with a minor in painting. From there, she earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in Personality Psychology from Howard as well. She conducts research about creativity, its relationship to health and well-being, and creative identity development.
