Amal's Story
Amal Hassan is a public health researcher and practitioner with a Master of Public Health from the
George Washington University, specializing in Maternal and Child Health. She brings over five years of
experience advancing gender equity and safeguarding in humanitarian and development settings through
applied research, participatory approaches, and capacity building.
Amal has worked across academic institutions along with local and international NGOs, where she led
research coordination, project management, program design, communications, and knowledge translation
efforts for survivor-centered initiatives. Her work focuses on preventing gender-based violence globally,
centering community voices in climate change adaptation, and advancing equitable health systems. As a
first-generation daughter of Somali immigrants, Amal’s lived experience shapes her research at the
intersection of health equity, social justice, and community empowerment. In her free time, Amal enjoys
exploring creative outlets that celebrate culture, faith, and community—rooted in her Somali heritage and
shared within her local community.
